RDAP Program: Who Qualifies and How It Works

RDAP is one of the only programs in federal prison that can reduce your sentence by up to 12 months.

But not everyone qualifies — and many who could qualify never get in.

What RDAP is

The Residential Drug Abuse Program is:

  • A structured treatment program

  • Conducted inside federal prison

  • Followed by halfway house placement

What you can gain

  • Up to 12 months off your sentence

  • Additional halfway house time

  • Earlier transition back to the community

Who qualifies

Eligibility is based on:

  • Documented substance use history

  • Timing of that history

  • PSR documentation

  • BOP review

Why people get denied

Most denials happen because:

  • Substance use is not documented correctly

  • Timeline doesn’t meet requirements

  • PSR language doesn’t support eligibility

Where the real opportunity is

RDAP eligibility is often determined before you even enter prison.

Final thought

If it’s not documented, it doesn’t exist.
